Birds Need Water All Year Round

Water is very important to birds for drinking and bathing - even in the winter. Clean feathers help birds stay warm and having access to a bird bath can be critical during colder weather. Research has shown that a chickadee with well-maintained feathers can sustain a 70°F (21°C) layer of insulation between the outside air and its skin.

Plus, adding a dependable water source in your yard is one of the easiest ways to increase the variety of birds in your yard. More birds, more joy! 💛

Winter Bird Bath Tips 💦

As we're preparing our yards and gardens for winter, take a couple minutes to tend to your bird baths too. The inevitable freezing and thawing that occurs in the colder months can cause damage to concrete, aggregate, ceramic and glass bird baths. Also, do not use a heating element in any of these types of bird baths. Ideally store them away for the season, or turn the bowl upside down so water doesn't accumulate.

Plastic, metal and granite bird baths can stay outside for the season and can be used with a bird bath heater to keep water accessible. Or use a heated bird bath to ensure that birds have a reliable, open source of water. It's the little things that can make a big difference for our birds!
